A Note From Our Administrator

Medicare Open Enrollment

It is that time of year again, and as residents of an assisted living or other long-term care community, now is the time to think about your Medicare Benefits and assure they are the best fit for your current providers.  For The Gardens of Cedar Rapids it is important to understand how your plan works with our pharmacy (Right Dose Pharmacy) and our therapy department (Millennium Therapy).  Whether you reside in long-term care and need to think about future coverage for skilled nursing care and prescription drugs, or if you reside in assisted living or memory care and need to think about out-patient therapy services (typically covered by Part B), now is the best time to ask questions and get the plan that is best for you.

For 2019 coverage, open enrollment will run from October 15th, 2018, to December 7th, 2018.  During the annual enrollment period (AEP) you can make changes to various aspects of your coverage. You can switch from Original to Medicare with a supplement or whatever plan best suits your needs in your healthcare setting.  Please take the time to check with your therapy staff or administration to hear what plans are in network with The Gardens of Cedar Rapids.

Meet Tina Parizek!

Tina is our new front desk receptionist!

From Tina:

"I live in Walford with my husband Myron. We have 3 children that are all in their twenties. Our son Keegan graduated from the U of I in May and accepted a job in Minneapolis. Our other son Konner is a senior at ISU and our daughter is a sophomore at U of I. I group up in Northeast Iowa on a farm. I graduated from Waukon High School and then moved to Cedar Rapids to attend Kirkwood Community College. After graduating from  Kirkwood, I worked in an office for 12 1/2 years before starting a family. I was then fortunate to be a stay-at-home mom. I enjoyed my time home with them and being able to spend time volunteering in their classrooms. During their childhood years, I worked various part-time jobs. I have enjoyed my first month at The Gardens of Cedar Rapids and I look forward to getting to know the residents and the staff better. "

We are so happy to have you Tina! Welcome!

 About Thanksgiving...

Article taken from Wikipedia

Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is a national holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. It originated as a harvest festival. Thanksgiving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, after Congress requested a proclamation by George Washington. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who in the Heavens," to be celebrated on the last Thursday in November. Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader fall/winter holiday season in the U.S.

The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621. This feast lasted three days, and—as accounted by attendee Edward Winslow—it was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings"—days of prayer thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought.
