March News and Events

Happening this month...

Music Generations Demonstration

Last year The Gardens of Cedar Rapids was fortunate to host a "Music Generations" class where young children and older adults are given the opportunity to interact together while making music, dancing, and visiting with one another.  These interactions have a big impact on both the child and the adult, benefitting everyone! Come see for yourself! Have little ones ages 5 and under? Join us March 5th from 10-11am in our Skilled Living Room for a demonstration of this class!  Given enough interest this class will be held at The Gardens of Cedar Rapids again later this year.

Resident Spotlight

Norma Schmidt was born on December 15th 1932 in Dubuque, Iowa. She was raised in town with her three brothers and one sister. She lived in Dubuque until she married her husband, Martin or "Marty" in 1955. Once married the couple moved to the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. After a few years her husband's job transferred them to Oelwein, Iowa where the couple built their life and raised their three kids (a daughter and two sons). In Oelwein she worked as the middle school secretary for 24 years. And after all these years, students of that middle school who run into Norma still remember her. She loved the students and the staff very much.   Norma lived in Oelwein until 2009 and then moved to Cedar Rapids. She likes to joke that Cedar Rapids is her retirement spot. She misses her old condo but is happy to be at The Gardens of Cedar Rapids.

Throughout the years Norma loved taking care of her grandchildren, working in her flower garden and taking craft classes. She was always hoping she'd pick up on some skills! In her free time Norma enjoys spending time with family and friends. Her children are her greatest achievement, she is so proud of them. She has a daughter (Diana) here in Cedar Rapids, a son (Ron) in Des Moines, and a son (Darryl) in Rosemont, Minnesota. She has eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, all scattered between Iowa and Minnesota.

Be sure to join us on Thursday, March 28th at 2pm in our Piano Lounge to recognize Norma! We will be serving a special "cornflake cookie" that Norma used to make!

Regular Reminders

Labeling Laundry

If you or your loved one resides in our long term care or skilled nursing facilities, please remember to clearly mark all clothing with the name of the owner. This helps ensure that all laundry is properly returned. Please speak with Brenda our Housekeeping Manager if you have questions or would like assistance. Thank you!

Meal Punch Cards

We love to have visitors at our table! If you are a regular visitor we offer meal punch cards in either 5 or 10 meal increments. All meals are $5. Your server will ask to see your meal punch card at the time of your meal. Purchase yours at the front desk! See Tina at the front desk for questions.

If you know in advance when you will be dining with us, please let us know! This helps us ensure there is enough food to go around!

Transportation to Appointments

We offer transportation to appointments on Thursdays during business hours for our Assisted Living tenants. We appreciate at least one week's notice. This helps accommodate everyone the best we can.  For scheduling and availability speak with Eva or Terry.
