Resident Spotlight

Mary Hayden

Mary was born on May 3rd, 1928 in Marengo, Iowa to Ben and Florence Merritt. Her father worked at the Post Office and took care of their 13 acres of land that held cows, chickens, pigs, and rabbits. Her mother was a housewife. She had four brothers, one is still living today and resides in Marengo. Mary was the second oldest child. When she was younger she always wanted to be a nurse, but ended up working as an office manager.

She moved to Cedar Rapids in 1946 and married her husband in 1947. The couple was married for 53 years, had three children (two girls and a boy). Her son lives in St. Louis, one daughter lives in Solon, and the other daughter lives in Knoxville. Mary has seven grandchildren.

Through the years Mary always enjoyed sewing clothing for herself and the kids. She liked to cook and is well known for her peanut clusters. Join us on Thursday, May 30th at 3:00pm in the Piano Lounge as we celebrate Mary and get a chance to taste her famous peanut clusters!

Regular Reminders

Labeling Laundry

For those residing in our long term care facility, laundry should be clearly marked or labeled with the resident's name. This helps ensure all laundry is returned to their proper owner. See Brenda our Housekeeping Manager for assistance or questions.

Transportation to Appointments

Assisted living tenants have access to transportation to/from appointments on Thursdays during business hours. This needs to be coordinated with Terry our Maintenance Director or Eva our Activity Director. We appreciate one week's notice to accommodate everyone's schedules. (Please note that transportation cannot be guaranteed in the case of multiple tenants needing transportation to appointments. The first scheduled will receive priority.)

Meal Punch Cards

We love to have guests at our table! If you are a regular attender, please purchase a meal punch card ticket at the front desk. All meals are just $5, and the cards are sold in 5 meal or 10 meal increments. Your server will ask to see your punch card at the time of your meal. See Tina at the front desk to purchase or for questions.

Gardening Tips from our Master Gardener, Emil

Water Warning

"This is the season that most flowers are over watered, resulting in the death of the plants. Never eater in excess particularly following a wet season. Read the instructions on the plant's label when you purchase and do no throw the instructions away. If you need to make a label for your plant, be sure to include depth to be planted and whether the plant needs sun or shade. This is important for maintaining healthy plants."  -Emil

Buying a Tree?

"It is very common for people to purchase a tree for their yard without paying attention to the label. Purchase a tree that will grow in your area. Then keep it watered until frost. The tree will store the water in its roots. I myself have planted over sixty trees over the years and watched them grow." -Emil

Wishing you all a wonderful month!
